Peter
Lehmann’s personal bravery, loyalty and commitment to the Barossa
forged the foundations of the winery that bears his name, built in
1979 to protect the livelihood of his mates, the independent Barossa
grape growers, and their treasured vineyards. His passion for, and
commitment to, the Barossa is infectious and continues with everyone
today that is associated with Peter Lehmann Wines, now under the
guidance of son Doug Lehmann.
A conviction that the Barossa is the best place in Australia to make wine, and having enough self belief to constantly explore and push the boundaries of wine excellence has yielded some impressive results over the years, perhaps none more spectacularly than in both 2003 and 2006 when they accepted the awards for Best Australian Producer and International Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in London.
Their commitment to the Barossa and the growers has been rewarded and the winemakers enjoy access to a legacy of over 900 vineyards that has no peer in the Barossa winemaking community. The growers, their vineyards and a commitment to excellence in Barossa winemaking have been the backbone of Peter Lehmann Wines since 1979.
Whilst the success of Peter Lehmann’s wines has been based upon reliability and value for money, the world class reputation is consistently reinforced by international recognition of these Barossa Wines of Excellence. The very epitomy of the Barossa Valley, the wines listed here are not only some of the best from their regions but are also recognised as benchmark wines from Australia. Shiraz features heavily and we are delighted to be able to offer for the first time this iconic range of wines culminating in the Stonewell Shiraz. There is no other range of Barossa wines which command the respect world wide that this range does, the supreme efforts from ‘The Baron Of Barossa’!

Peter Lehmann Wines has always had enormous faith in Barossa Semillon and believe it is a unique Australian white wine style. This wine is named in honour of ‘Margaret’, Peter Lehmann’s wife, who is a proclaimed champion of Barossa Semillon and a feisty supporter of all good things Barossan, including Peter himself. Their faith has been challenged over the past 30 years, but at Peter Lehmann Wines, they made a commitment to their growers to champion Barossa Semillon to the world with all the energy and passion they could muster. In so doing these old vineyards are preserved by their growers and we’re rewarded with access to a rich choice of vineyards to select the very finest Semillon for the Margaret Barossa Semillon each year. Released as a 5 year old wine the Margaret is a fruit driven, deliciously dry, white wine that reflects our obsession with Barossa Semillon and our commitment to champion this wine style to the world. |

Eight Songs Shiraz was born of their love of art and music and inspired by an operatic work, ‘Eight Songs for Mad King’, first performed in the Barossa in 1993. The Barossa stands amongst the great wine regions of the world. From this region, Shiraz can express diversity in flavour, style and texture. The diverse terroir of their growers’ Barossa vineyards is reflected in the character of their wines. Soils, elevations and vine age vary from one vineyard to the next. The heart of Eight Songs lies in the old Shiraz vineyards spread across the landscape of the Barossa. During the vintage, they walk these vineyards, which typically yield less than 2.5 tonnes per acre, tasting the fruit, seeking the concentrated flavours they need for this style of Shiraz. With Eight Songs they show an elegant and distinctly softer side to Barossa Shiraz. Fermented and matured in 100% new French oak hogsheads the palate shows dark plums, chocolate mocha notes with hints of vanillin undertones. The seamless integration of opulent fruit and velvety tannins creates an elegant expression of Barossa Shiraz at its sensuous best. |

Exceptional vineyards are the heart of the Barossa Excellence Collection. Rare wines that define excellence in Barossa winemaking. Stonewell Shiraz is Peter Lehmann’s best wine of each vintage and one of the world’s great Shiraz. It is the most powerful expression of Shiraz they make from their growers’ vineyards each vintage. The pedigree of these vineyards and the knowledge that has been passed from each winemaking generation at Peter Lehmann Wines to the next assures us these will be wines of great longevity. The story of Stonewell Shiraz began in 1987 when Peter Lehmann decided to make a special Shiraz - a wine of immense intensity and muscularity that would demand time in the barrel and bottle before release. The wine was named ‘Stonewell’ after the district that he believed best showed the characters admired most in Barossa Shiraz. This tradition has continued and each vintage the best Shiraz from their legacy of growers’ Barossa vineyards is chosen to create Stonewell. Usually no more than a dozen small, old vineyards are selected each year, the oldest planted in 1885. Located in the harder country, these are some of their lowest yielding vineyards. The berries are small and sparse with crops typically less than 2 tonnes per acre. Dense black centre with a deep garnet rim. The nose shows lashings of dark plums and chocolate with hints of mint. A wine of great dignity, its structure is superbly taut, with intense depth of fruit reined in by the firm tannins. |

For his style, integrity and skill as a winemaker, Peter Lehmann has come to be known as ‘Mentor’ by many of today’s Australian winemakers. His conviction that the Barossa was capable of making the best wines in the world extended far beyond Shiraz – he’s always called it a ‘Garden of Eden’, a winemaker’s paradise. When it came to selecting a wine to dedicate to Peter Lehmann, it was not without a sense of irony that they chose Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon. This is the best Cabernet Sauvignon they make each vintage and their particular dedication to Peter - the founder of Peter Lehmann Wines and ‘Champion of the Barossa’. Mentor is fermented and matured in 100% French oak hogsheads, which integrates seamlessly with the powerful flavours and structure of the wine. |

The first wine they ever sold was called ‘The Futures Shiraz’ and they sold it to their friends and family on a ‘pay now and we’ll deliver in two years’ arrangement. It certainly wasn’t some flash marketing gimmick – they didn’t even have a marketing department then. In all honesty, it was simply that they needed the cash when they started to ensure they did in fact have a future! The 1980 Barossa Valley Futures Shiraz was a magnificent wine when it was first released and when they look back at all the Shiraz they have made over the past quarter century or more, that very first wine they made in 1980 still drinks remarkably well. That’s the incredible thing about Barossa Shiraz – you can enjoy it young when they release it from their cellars, but it’s also capable of extraordinary longevity. In keeping with the tradition of Peter Lehmann Wines Barossa Shiraz, this is an eminently enjoyable wine, but will faithfully reward long term cellar maturation. |
